MONTE VISTA — For the first time in several years, Monte Vista will have a Veterans Day Parade on Nov. 12 at 10 a.m.
Though details for the event are still underway, Rio Grande County Commissioner Scott Deacon is thrilled to be a part of the planning process and is looking for additional help to get the event off the ground.
“I am really happy to be planning this event. I was never a veteran, but I think this is something our community needs. I am looking for some help with planning though, so anyone who has ideas can reach out to me,” said Deacon. “We just really want participants for the parade so we aren’t doing entry forms but will have waivers for participants to sign.”
Deacon was approached by a local veteran and asked if he would be willing to coordinate the event and Deacon immediately jumped on the opportunity.
“So far, we are hoping to have local school bands from Monte Vista and Del Norte, a local car club, the tractor club and hopefully the Honor Guard and a military fly over, though all of this is still in the works. Any help anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated,” said Deacon.
Deacon will also be reaching out to Homelake Veteran Center to see about working with them.
“I just think it is really important that we recognize and celebrate our local veterans. This is something we should do every year and hopefully will be able to moving forward,” he said.
