DENVER – The fifth-ranked Centauri High School boys basketball team won one game and lost one in the first two days of the Class 3A State Tournament at the University of Denver’s Hamilton Gym.
Centauri 41, Yuma 40
Troy Sowards hit a 3-point basket just as time expired to give the fifth-ranked Centauri High School boys basketball team a 41-40 win over fourth-ranked Yuma on Thursday.
Jonathan Thomson gave the Outlaws the early 2-0 lead with a layup, but Jace Haslett made back-to-back layups for a 4-2 Falcons lead.
Brody Sheffield made a three to put Yuma back into the lead. Haslett made two free throws, and Carson Bagwell knocked down a jumper.
Alex Pensaro made a layup, however, Sowards buried a trey. Sheffield made a three on the other side, but Bagwell also drained a 3-pointer. Sheffield made another three, but Centauri led 14-13 at the end of the first quarter.
Sowards opened the second quarter by knocking down a jumper. Reyli Trejo and Sheffield both made layups to give Yuma a 17-16 lead.
Sowards sank a 3-pointer, and he later made three free throws for a 22-17 lead.
Sheffield drove for a layup, but so did Haslett. Sheffield made three free throws to cut the Falcons’ lead to 24-22 at halftime.
Pensaro began the second half by splitting at the line. Bagwell answered with a layup, but Silas Baucke hit a short jumper.
Sheffield made another three to give the Outlaws a 28-26 lead. Pensaro also scored to push the lead to 30-26.
Todd Broyles and Sowards both scored to tie the score at 30-30. Pansaro put Yuma back on top, but Haslett scored to deadlock the score at 32-32 after the third quarter.
Thomson and Pansaro opened the fourth quarter with layups, but Bagwell and Haslett both scored to knot the score at 36-36. Thomson scored again, but so did Bagwell.
Baucke scored with 1:02 remaining to give Yuma a 40-38 lead. Sheffield missed two free throws with five seconds to play, and the Falcons called time out to set up the game-winning play.
Sowards led Centauri with 16 points, followed by Haslett with 12 and Bagwell with 11.
Sheffield was Yuma’s top scorer with 19 points.
Resurrection Christian 49, Centauri 31
The Falcons lost their first game of the season on Friday as they were defeated by top-ranked Resurrection Christian, 49-31.
Haslett gave Centauri the first lead of the game with a layup. However, Blake Cox and Graham Riggs both scored for a 4-2 Rez Christian lead.
Carson Shawcroft and Bagwell both scored to put the Falcons back in front. However, Ty Yoder and Riggs both scored for an 8-6 lead.
Sean Jarvies drained a 3-point basket just before time expired and the Falcons led 9-8 at the end of the first quarter.
Riggs scored five straight points to begin the second quarter, but Haslett scored for the Falcons. Cade Crutcher made a three, however, Bagwell scored to cut the deficit to 16-13.
Crutcher knocked down a jumper and Yoder buried a trey. Riggs then made a layup to give Rez Christian a 23-13 advantage.
Haslett scored again, but Riggs’ jumper gave the Cougars a 25-15 lead at the break.
Bagwell scored in the paint to start the second-half scoring, however, Crutcher scored for the Cougars. Sowards then sank a three, but Evan Koenig drove for a layup.
Shawcroft’s layup reduced the deficit to 29-22, however, Yoder made a 3-pointer, and Koenig and David Grosboll both scored to give the Cougars a 36-22 advantage at the end of the third quarter.
Crutcher opened the fourth quarter with a three, and Riggs made a layup and later split at the line.
Sowards brought the Centauri crowd to its feet with a dunk, but Riggs buried a trey.
Bagwell made two free throws and Haslett one to bring the Falcons within 45-27. But Crutcher made a layup for a 20-point lead.
Sowards and Haslett both scored to conclude the Centauri scoring. Cox’s layup wrapped up the scoring.
Haslett led the Falcons in scoring with nine points, followed by Bagwell with eight and Sowards with seven.
The Cougars had three players score in double figures. Riggs led the way with 17, followed by Crutcher with 12 and Yoder with 10.
Season ends today
Centauri (26-1) will face second-ranked Windsor Charter Academy, a 54-46 loser to third-ranked Strasburg, in the third-place game today at 10 a.m.
