ALAMOSA — Incumbent Republican Senator Cleave Simpson is headed back to Denver for his second term after winning 55% of the vote in Senate District 6.
His opponent, Democrat Vivian Smotherman of Durango, conceded the race at about 9 p.m. Tuesday night, Nov. 5.
When asked how he was feeling at the end of a victorious evening, Simpson told the Valley Courier, “I have mixed emotions. I’m glad it’s over. I can kind of catch my breath. Now it’s nose to the grindstone and back to work.
“I’m always very honored to represent the constituents in District 6. I always find myself sitting in the Senate chambers and I’m just a farm kid from Alamosa. I’m in this majestic building with all its history. Very inspiring.”
When asked about Smotherman, Simpson said, “The first time I met Vivian Smotherman, I told her I have respect for anyone willing to put yourself in the limelight and exposure. As for myself, I can look in the mirror and say I conducted this race much like the last time. I ran with dignity and respect and never degraded my opponent. I’ll continue to just try to do the right thing for my constituents and the state of Colorado.”
While the results are unofficial until certified by the Secretary of State, as of 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday night, what follows is a breakdown of votes by county in the San Luis Valley.
