SANFORD – The fourth-ranked Sanford High School football team left little doubt when it hosted Swink Friday at the Mustangs’ field as Sanford defeated the Lions 56-7.

“We played well tonight,” said Sanford coach Cody Reynolds. “We’re glad to get through the Homecoming fiasco, put this one behind us and move on to next week.”

It didn’t take long for the Mustangs to get on the board as they found the end zone on the first play from scrimmage. Trason Gartrell took a pitch from Colton Reynolds and ran down the left side of the field 53 yards for the touchdown. Bryce Keck kicked in the extra point and Sanford led 7-0 just 20 seconds into the contest.

The teams then exchanged punts before the Lions fumbled on their own 1-yard line. J.D. Faucette scored on the next play and Keck again converted the extra point for a 14-0 lead.

Swink got into Sanford territory for the first time of its next possession, but it turned the ball over on downs just past midfield. Gartrell scored again just three plays later, this time on an 18-yards run. Keck’s point-after was good again, and the Mustangs led 21-0.

The Mustangs scored just one more time before the end of the first quarter. Colton Reynolds tossed a 47-yard scoring strike to Jared McCarroll, and Keck again made the extra point for a 28-0 advantage.

The Lions fumbled the ball away again on their next possession. Jared McCarroll scored on a 4-yard run and Keck’s point-after attempt was good for a 35-0 lead.

After another Swink punt, Sanford scored again, this time on a 26-yard run by J.D. Faucette. Keck again converted the extra point for a 42-0 lead.

Swink turned the ball over on downs in its own territory and Sanford made them pay. Colton Reynolds scored on a 25-yard quarterback-keeper and Keck made the point after for a 49-0 lead at halftime.

The second half was played under a running clock and the Mustangs scored one more time. Colton Reynolds went to the end zone on a 50-yard run and Keck made the point-after for a 56-0 advantage.

Swnik finally got on the scoreboard on what proved to be the final play of the game. Logan Marshall scored on a 3-yard reverse sweep and Russell Ballantyne made the extra point.

Sanford accumulated 372 yards of total offense with 331 coming on the ground. Gartrell led all rushers with 187 yards on eight carries, followed by Colton Reynolds with 90 yards on three carries.

The Mustangs completed their only pass of the game with Colton Reynolds throwing to Jared McCarroll for 47 yards.

Swink managed only 117 total yards – 68 rushing and 49 passing.

Kyler Lagergren led the Lions running game with 49 yards on 14 carries. Hayden Reynolds completed nine out of 21 passes for 49 yards, and his top receiver was Taven Romero with three catches for 11 yards. Javin Summers had two receptions for 19 yards, Lagergren had two fir 13 yards and Marshall had two for six yards.

Sanford (2-0) will go on the road for the first time this season as it will travel to top-ranked and defending state champion Haxtun. Kickoff on Friday is at 7 p.m.

“It’s a tough program,” coach Reynolds said. “We feel fortunate to get the chance to play them, and measure them selves, and we’ll find out where we’re at.”
