SANFORD – The third-ranked Sanford High School boys basketball team got off to a good start and kept the momentum going through the rest of the game as the Mustangs defeated Buena Vista 47-21 Tuesday at the SHS gym.
“I thought we came out with a much better mentality tonight than we did the last game,” said Sanford coach Brice Crowther.
Landon Pace made one of two free throws to give the Demons a 1-0 lead, and Knox Reid then scored in the point. That would prove to be Buena Vista’s only lead and it didn’t last long as Travis Canty tied the score with a 3-point basket, and he later made a layup and a free throw for a 6-3 Mustangs lead.
Trason Gartrell knocked down a jumper and Travis Canty and Gartrell both drove for layups to give Sanford a 12-3 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
Reid scored the first points of the second quarter, and Hudson Wingo made two free throws to cut the Sanford lead to 12-7.
That would be Buena Vista’s final scoring in the quarter. Rylan Mortensen drove for a layup to increase the lead to 14-7, and Cahl Larsen split at the line and later made a jumper.
Gartell and Mortensen both drove for layups, and Larsen and Colter Canty made jumpers to give the Mustangs a 25-7 lead at halftime.
Reid made a 3-pointer to open the third quarter, but Colter Canty answered with a three of his own. He later drove for a layup for a 32-10 advantage,
Reid scored in the paint, but Travis Canty did the same. Reid then split at the line, and Joe Bearss made a layup to cut the Sanford lead to 34-15.
Mortensen made a trey, and Gartrell split at the line for a 38-15 advantage at the end of the third quarter.
Wingo scored the first points of the fourth quarter, but Sanford scored nine straight points. Travis Canty scored three of the points, while Jared McCarroll, Mortensen and J.D. Faucette each scored two.
The Demons scored the final four points with Trace Steed and Daniel DeWalt both scoring a basket.
Travis Canty was Sanford’s top scorer with 13 points, followed by Gartrell, Colter Canty, Larsen and Mortensen each with seven.
Reid led Buena Vista with 10 points.
Sanford (10-0, 1-0) was on a road trip this weekend. It played at Fowler on Friday, and at Custer County today.
“I think right now, we’re just working on putting together multiple practices and multiple games where we come and try to compete every day.”
