Parade of Lights shines on Del Norte

DEL NORTE – The new sidewalks on the north side of Grande Avenue had their moment to shine during the Del Norte Parade of Lights people from the San Luis Valley ventured to town for the holiday fun.

The Del Norte Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Del Norte announced the theme for the parade a few weeks ago as “Under Construction” and those that participated in the parade made good use of the theme for the night.

Along with the parade, several town businesses and organizations hosted open houses throughout the evening offering warm beverages, sweet treats and fun activities for all to enjoy. The Del Norte Public Library handed out free books to attending children, Up Top Café hosted an ornament decorating activity and High Valley Community Center was the hub for the one and only Santa Claus after he made his appearance at the beginning of the parade riding in the bucket of a Del Norte Fire Department truck.

People enjoyed an evening of holiday cheer with brightly lit OHVs, fire trucks, ambulances and much more. Everyone came out in style to get a small taste of the holiday season and though the town was still reeling from a fall full of construction, the end results were much appreciated.

“It has been a long time since we could really enjoy walking downtown and now that the construction is complete on this side of the street, I think we can see it was worth the hassle,” said a resident of Del Norte.

The Rio Grande County Museum was also open to the public, offering warm drinks and cookies to patrons as they prepared for the parade. Thanks to the dedicated work by Creek Water Construction, the 1875 Barlow and Sanderson Stage Office was lit up from the inside, bringing a soft, warm glow to the windows that have been dark for over 100 years. The office is in the final stages of reconstruction and will be open to the public by early spring.

AS the parade came to a close and almost all the children had given their Christmas wishes to Santa for safe keeping, the Del Norte Fire Department lit up the night sky above Lookout Mountain with fireworks.
