Letter to Editor: Not in favor of county clerk’s new office hours

Posted

Editor,

I am writing this letter hoping to inform the electorate in Rio Grande County about plans for our unopposed, three-term Rio Grande County Clerk suddenly decided that her office need only be open four days per week.

It seems Cindy Hill’s husband and two of her co-workers' husbands work for Rio Grande County Road and Bridge Department, which incidentally work four 10-hour days. I assume Mrs. Hill and her employees think it will be great to have a three-day weekend. She has posted on Facebook that she intends to be open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

My problem is forthcoming: the County Clerk’s Office is directly tied to the state bureaucracy, which certainly is not at work at 7 a.m. Many times, the Clerk’s Office computers are not working for 20 or more minutes after the 8 a.m. start time.

Of all the county offices, I believe the County Clerk’s Office to be the most important. I also believe that as an elected official your job is to satisfy your constituency. If Mrs. Hill does not want to work on Fridays, that is her choice, and it should not infringe on others’ work schedules.

If any of you reading this agrees with me, please contact Mrs. Hill at the Rio Grande County Clerk’s Office and let her know. Just do not do it on Friday.
