DENVER – The season concluded for the Alamosa High School girls basketball team after it was defeated by Holy Family, 58-39, in the Class 4A State Tournament quarterfinals Wednesday at the Denver Coliseum.
“Holy Family is a good team, so I have to give them props,” said Alamosa coach Ty Crowther. “We could have played a little bit better, but we have a good group of girls.”
Aubrey Rothermich gave the Lady Mean Moose an early 2-0 lead with a layup. However, the Lady Tigers scored eight straight points on 3-point baskets by Gracie Ward and Enyiah Contreraz and two free throws by Alexcia Oaxaca.
Morgan Ortega made a three, and Jaelin Garcia and Audrina Knorr both made layups. Rothermich then split at the line to give Alamosa a 10-8 lead.
That would be the Lady Mean Moose’s only lead. Alyssa Quintana split at the line, and Ward made two free throws to put Holy Family back in front for good. Ward then made a layup, and Quintana made one of two free throws. Alicia Barajas made a layup in the final seconds to give the Lady Tigers a 16-10 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
Oaxaca opened the second-quarter scoring with a layup, and Barajas made two free tosses for a 20-10 lead.
Arreli Felix ended the Holy Family run with a layup, but Quintana drove for a layup. Ortega made a layup and Felix converted two free throws to reduce the deficit to 22-16.
Barajas made a layup, but Ortega made two free throws, and Garcia scored in the paint to bring the Lady Mean Moose within 24-20.
Quintana scored a layup, but Ortega made two more from the line.
Holy Family led 26-22 at halftime.
Quintana began the second half with a layup, but Ortega made her second 3-pointer to reduce the lead to 28-25.
Barajas made two straight baskets, but Rothermich made a layup. Priya Lucas and Oaxaca both made threes to push the lead to238-27.
Leela Gutierrez drive for a layup, but Oaxaca split at the line. Garcia also made one of two free throws but Holy Family led 39-30 at the end of the third quarter.
Oaxaca scored four points to open the fourth quarter, and Contreraz made back-to-back treys.
Ortega scored on a fast break, but Barajas made a layup, and Elli Nugent sank a 3-pointer and a layup to give Holy Family its largest lead at 56-32.
Ortega made her third three, and Quintana made a layup. Rothermich’s three and Garcia making one of two free tosses wrapped up the scoring.
Ortega led Alamosa in scoring with 13 points, followed by Rothermich with eight and Garcia with seven.
Holy Family had four players score in double figures. Oaxaca scored 12 points, Contreraz 11, and Quintana and Barajas both scored 10.
Alamosa ends the season with 19 wins and seven losses. It loses only one senior in Ortega.
“We have a captain we’re going to miss in Morgan Ortega,” Crowther said. “I can’t say enough about her. I love her to death. But the future looks bright for the program and it starts with the leader that she was. We’re going to miss her big time, but I’m looking forward to the future.”
