Grizzlies fade in second half vs. Cowboys

ALAMOSA – After scoring a touchdown late in the first half, it looked as though the Adams State University football team had a shot when it hosted New Mexico Highlands Saturday at Rex Field.

Unfortunately, the Grizzlies could not score again as they were defeated by the Cowboys 49-10.

Highlands wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as Tavita Veleti ran into the end zone from two yards out. Alekzander Britt made the point after for a 7-0 Cowboys lead.

Britt extended the lead to 10-0 with a 43-yard field goal.

The Grizzlies scored midway through the second quarter as Quinton Pacheco kicked a 37-yard field goal.

Maurice Collier increased the Cowboys; lead to 17-3 as he caught a 28-yard touchdown from Collin Stucki. Britt again made the point-after.

After Blaine Peebles caught a 45-yard pass from Gavin Herberg, despite pass interference, Herberg brought the Grizzlies within 17-10 with a 2-yard pass to Jaysn Wade. Pacheco’s extra point was good.

The rest of the game was all Cowboys. Valeti started the second-half onslaught with a 1-yard touchdown run. Britt again made the extra point for a 24-10 lead.

Jeffrey Jones then ran in a 60-yard touchdown run with 7:41 left in the third quarter. The snap from center on the point-after attempt was wild, but the holder, George Wiles-Khoeler threw to Royal Young in the end zone for two points and the lead grew to 32-10.

Valeti scored for the third time, this time a 15-yard run, and Britt made the extra point for a 39-10 New Mexico Highlands lead at the end of the third quarter.

Britt opened the fourth quarter with a 25-yard field goal. Kanai Satele wrapped up the scoring with a 31-yard run late in the game. Britt’s extra point was good.

Adams State had 241 yards of total offense. Herberg completed 10 of 24 passes for 148 yards. Peebles, Kahekili Pahlo, Devin Dawkins and Wade each had two receptions.

Herberg and Elijah Harris III led the Grizzly ground game with 28 yards each.

The Cowboys had 516 total yards – 431 rushing and 85 passing.

Jones led Highlands with 179 yards on 14 carries, while Stucki completed five of eight passes for 85 yards.

Adams State (0-8, 0-6) will travel to Durango this Saturday to take on Fort Lewis College. Kickoff is at 2 p.m.
