Fugitive Paul Sandoval captured in rugged Alamosa County mountains after 4 years on the run

ALAMOSA —In an official statement issued Sunday morning, the Alamosa County Sheriff’s Office announced the successful apprehension of Paul Sandoval, a fugitive who had been on the run for nearly four years. Sandoval, who was wanted in Alamosa County on multiple felony warrants, including sexual assault on a child, was taken into custody earlier today in rugged mountain terrain near Blanca Peak.

The arrest was the result of a coordinated multi-agency operation involving the U.S. Marshals Service, the Alamosa County Sheriff’s Office, the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office, and the Alamosa Police Department.

After developing new intelligence, investigators determined Sandoval was likely hiding in a remote area of the mountains. Teams from multiple agencies navigated extremely difficult terrain during the operation. Despite the challenging conditions, officers successfully located Sandoval.

When he refused to comply with commands, less-lethal means were deployed to safely take him into custody without serious injury to him or any of the officers involved.

“This arrest brings closure to a four-year search for a dangerous fugitive,” said Alamosa County Sheriff Robert Jackson. “The terrain was not easy, and the conditions made this operation especially difficult.

"I want to personally thank U.S. Marshal Kirk M. Taylor and the dedicated men and women of the U.S. Marshals Service for their key role and leadership in this operation. Their persistence and professionalism were instrumental in tracking Sandoval down. I want to recognize Sheriff David Lucero and the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office for sending resources and personnel to assist.

Colorado sheriffs share a strong commitment with one another and with the U.S. Marshals Service to bring fugitives to justice and keep our communities safe. This case demonstrates that partnership in action — when law enforcement agencies work together, even the most challenging terrain cannot stand in the way of justice.”

Sandoval is currently being held at the Alamosa County Jail, pending transfer and further judicial proceedings.

The Alamosa County Sheriff’s Office extends its sincere gratitude to all partnering agencies and to the public for their continued support in assisting law enforcement. Anyone with information about wanted individuals is encouraged to contact the Alamosa County Sheriff’s Office at (719) 589-6608, or provide anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers (719) 589-4111.
