Falcons soar past Vikings, 56-0

LA JARA – The fourth-ranked Centauri High School football team had little trouble when it hosted Center Friday at the Falcons’ field, winning by a score of 56-0.

The lop-sided win gave coach Kyle Forster a chance to play some of his little-used athletes.

“Especially at Homecoming, everybody comes out and we want to play everybody and give them as much time as we can,” Forster said.

The Falcons had the ball first and wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Sean Jarvies tossed a 26-yard touchdown pass to Carson Shawcroft, but the extra-point attempt was unsuccessful and Centauri had a 6-0 lead just 51 seconds into the game.

The Falcons scored again at the 6:15 mark in the first quarter as Blake Johnson ran into the end zone from four yards out. Marcos Atencio ran in the two-point conversion and Centauri had a 14-0 lead.

Centauri scored one more time in the first quarter on an 18-yard run by Leland Chacon. Isaiah Livingstone booted the point-after for a 21-0 lead.

After a short Center punt, the Falcons extended the lead with Shawcroft scoring on a 17-yard run. Livingstone made the extra point.

The Vikings attempted a trick play on their next possession as Jaiden Martinez attempted a halfback pass. However, it was intercepted by Shawcroft who returned it 27 yards to the end zone. Livingstone again made the extra point for a 35-0 advantage.

The two Shawcroft touchdowns came within 14 seconds of each other.

Atencio stretched the lead with 8:41 left in the first half on a 1-yard touchdown plunge. Livingstone’s point-after attempt was good.

The Falcons scored one more time in the second quarter as Chacon got to the end zone on a 9-yard run. The snap on the point-after attempt was mishandled and Centauri took a 48-0 lead into halftime.

The Falcons wrapped up the scoring in the third quarter as Grayson Hunzeker tossed a 15-yard scoring strike to Shandon Gilleland. The two-point conversion by Cannon Thomas was successful.

The Vikings had one last chance to score as Devan Garcia threw a 41-yard pass to Jaiden Martinez. However, they came away empty as Chad Miller intercepted Martinez.

The Falcons had 334 yards of total offense with 240 coming on the ground. Chacon led the ground game with 93 yards on five carries, followed by Atencio with 67 yards on eight carries.

Twelve different running backs had at least one carry.

Drake Gallardo was the passing game leader as he completed all four of his passes for 53 yards. Sean Jarvies completed one of two passes for 26 yards, and Hunzeker completed his only attempt for 15 yards.

Donovan Jarvies had two receptions for 38 yards, and Shawcroft had two for 28 yards.

Center managed only 17 total yards. Devan Garcia completed four of nine passes for 50 yards. Martinez had two catches for 40 yards, and Yanixan Padilla had two for four yards.

The Vikings were held to minus-33 yards rushing.

Centauri (5-1, 2-0) will travel to Del Norte this coming Friday with kickoff slated for 7 p.m.

“We have to be prepared every week like it’s the best team we’re going to play,” Forster said. “That’s what we’re going to do this week. We have to keep going and move forward.”

Center (0-6, 0-2) will host Ignacio on Friday also at 7 p.m.
