DEL NORTE — With the spring and summer months quickly approaching, the Del Norte Public Library is looking to add to its list of sponsors for the new Story Walk located in the Del Norte North Park. The program was launched by the library and the Early Childhood Council of the San Luis Valley this past summer and has grown in popularity among families throughout the Valley.
The program requires a sponsor to purchase three children’s books from the approved list provided by Story Walk and each book is used to fill the podiums placed at the park. Families can walk along the trail, get exercise, and read a book along the way. The remaining book is then added to the collection at the library so that if a child or adult wants to continue to enjoy the book, they can rent it from the library.
Right now, the Story Walk is featuring a book titled “The Mystery of the Missing Red Mitten,” which is a fun and interactive tale written by Steven Kelogg.
“If you haven’t had a chance to get out and read it yet, now is the time before we switch over for spring. We would love to fill the schedule for book sponsors for the coming spring and summer months if we can,” said Del Norte Public Library Director Susan Williams.
“We are looking for sponsors of the Story Walk if you would like to sponsor a book, please contact us at the library. Businesses, families, individuals, and organizations can all participate and are welcome to become a sponsor. It is an easy process, and we are happy to help in any way we can, plus this is a great way to show support of the community and the library,” finished Williams.
In addition to sponsors for the Story Walk, Williams also announced that the library is looking to fill positions on their 501c3 Board of Directors. Williams says the library is close to further change and the board is seeking new faces and ideas.
“If you love books, reading and the library please consider coming and joining us, we would love to have you,” she said.
During the summer, the library funded a new roof and is looking to upgrade the outside stucco and install new gutters along the building's length. The Del Norte Library has been a community institution for well over 100 years. Williams and her crew have worked to improve services, technology, and the library’s book collection for the last several years and, with the help of new board members, hopes to continue the forward momentum well into the future.
