MONTE VISTA – Saturday’s game between the Monte Vista and sixth-ranked Centauri high school boys basketball games at the MVHS gym was close for the first quarter of play. But the Falcons dominated after that as they went on to defeat the Pirates 59-41.
Kaden Mellott made one of two free throws to give Monte Vista the early lead. Azaraiah Hurtado then drained a 3-point basket and a jumper from shorter range for a 6-0 Pirates lead.
Troy Sowards made a three for the Falcons’ first points, but Alex Marquez answered with a three of his own.
Carson Bagwell scored in the paint to bring Centauri within 9-5, but Kaden Madrid made one of two free throws.
Carson Shawcroft made a jumper, and Sean Jarvies made a trey to tie the score at 10-10. Darrien Archuleta buried a 3-pointer, but Jace Haslett drove for a layup, and Shawcroft made a trey to give the Falcons a 15-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Centauri started to pull away by scoring the first 10 points of the second quarter. Bagwell scored four of the points, and Sowards and Haslett three.
Hurtado made two free throws to end the first-half scoring, but Centauri led 25-15 at halftime.
Bagwell scored the first points of the second half, but Madrid split at the line.
Centauri scored the next 10 points with Bagwell and Sowards both scoring 3-point baskets, and Haslett and Todd Broyles both scoring two.
Marquez ended the run, but Broyles and Kamryn Garcia both scored a basket. Hurtado made a 3-pointer, but Garcia scored again. Hurtado scored in the paint to reduce the Centauri lead to 43-23.
Marquez scored the first points of the fourth quarter, but Haslett scored for the Falcons. Kobe Jiron made a pair of treys, but Bagwell made a three for Centauri for a 49-31 lead.
Marquez then made a layup, and Hurtado two baskets including a dunk to cut their deficit to 49-37. Bagwell made back-to-back layups, but Marquez made a jumper.
Bagwell and Garcia both made layups and Keadon McGinnis made two free throws for the Falcons’ largest lead at 59-39.
Madrid’s layup wrapped up the scoring.
Centauri had two players score in double figures. Bagwell led all scorers with 20 points and Sowards scored 10.
Hurtado was the Pirates’ top scorer with 16 points, followed by Marquez with 11.
Centauri (14-0, 4-0) hosted Alamosa on Tuesday, and it will travel to Pagosa Springs on Saturday.
Monte Vista (7-4, 1-2) played at Sargent on Tuesday and will play at Montezuma-Cortez on Friday, and will host Ignacio on Saturday.
