Centauri basketball sweeps Salida

LA JARA – The Centauri High School basketball teams played at home for the first time this season on Thursday as they hosted Salida.

The homecoming was successful for both teams as they swept the Spartans. The girls won 50-38, and the boys won 56-49 in overtime.

Girls game

Salida took a 6-2 lead to begin the game, but the Falcons got baskets from Lyndie Sowards and Rylie McCarroll, plus a free throw from McCarroll, and two free tosses by Sydney Haslett to take an 8-7 lead.

The Spartans took the lead back, but Haslett and McCarroll scored for a 12-9 lead. Lila Shively tied the score with a 3-point basket, but Lyndie Sowards drove for a layup to give Centauri a 14-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Braeden Johnson tied the score to begin the second quarter, and after a Haslett layup, Braeden Johnson drained a three for a 17-16 Salida lead.

McCarroll and Lyndie Sowards helped the Falcons regain the lead. They had a 23-21 edge before Reagan Oness made a layup and a free throw, and Shively made another trey for a 27-23 Spartans lead.

McCarrol made a layup and added a free throw to cut the deficit to 27-26 at halftime.

Kynlei Curtis started the second half with a 3-pointer, and Haslett made a layup. Alyvia Norton made two baskets to extend the Centauri lead to 35-27.

The Spartans closed to within 39-36 late in the quarter, but McCarroll drove for a layup for a 41-36 lead at the end of the period.

Curtis, Lyndie Sowards and Norton all scored layups to give the Falcons a double-digit lead at 47-36. Paityn Sowards made one of two free throws, and Norton made two.

Madelyn Johnson’s layup wrapped up the scvoring for the game.

The Falcons had four players score in double figures as McCarroll, Lyndie Sowards, Haslett and Norton all scored 10 points.

Braeden Johnson led Salida with 10.

Boys game

Sean Jarvies got the Falcons going with a 3-point basket and he later drained a short jumper. Carson Shawcroft’s layup gave Centauri a 7-2 lead.

The Spartans tied the score at 7-7, but Shandon. Gilleland and Keadon McGinnis both made threes. Ayden Wells made two free throws for the Spartans to cut the Falcons’ lead to 13-9 at the end of the first quarter.

Eli Schwarz helped Salida cut the lead to 13-12 with a trey. Centauri answered by scoring the next nine points with Gilleland scoring four of them, Shawcroft three and Jayse Maestas two.

Schwarz scored five points, but McGinnis made two free throws to give Centauri a 24-17 lead at halftime.

Sean Jarvies and Schwarz traded threes to begin the third quarter. Maestas made a layup, but Wells also made a trey to cut the lead to 29-23.

Salida closed to within 30-25 before Sean Jarvies made a layup and Maestas a 3-pointer. Gilleland knocked down a jumper to give the Falcons a double-digit lead at 37-27.

Centauri lead 41-28 after the third quarter, and McGinnis made a layup to start the fourth and gave the Falcons their largest lead at 43-28.

Salida mounted a comeback as it outscored Centauri 19-4 in the final 7:21. Tao Adams made a three to bring the Spartans within 47-45, and Matthew Edgington made two free throws to tie the score.

Both teams had a chance to score in the final minutes, however, the game went into overtime.

McGinnis gave Centauri the lead early in the extra session, and Donovan Jarvies made two free throws. Adams brought Salida within 51-49, but the Falcons made five out of six free throws to put the game on ice.

McGinnis, Sean Jarvies and Dallyn King each scored 15 points to lead Centauri.

Schwarz led all scorers with 23.

What’s next

The Centauri girls improved to 2-1 on the season and the boys earned their first win to go to 1-2.

The Falcons will host Colorado Springs Christian today. The girls play at 2:30 p.m., and the boys at 4 p.m.
