ALAMOSA – After scoring four wins at the Platte Valley Invitational last weekend, the Alamosa High School softball team was on a roll.
However, the Mean Moose’s four-game winning streak came to an end on Tuesday as they lost to Pueblo Centennial 5-3 at the Adams State University softball field.
“It was a tough game, but we hung in there,” said Alamosa coach Dominic Lomeli. “We punched them, they punched back and they ended up hitting us harder and won the game.”
The Bulldogs struck first with a run in the top of the first inning. Adrianna Lopez led off with a triple and came home on Ophelia Chavez’s sacrifice bunt.
Pueblo Centennial added a run in the third as Chavez hit a solo inside-the-park home run.
The Mean Moose answered with a run in the bottom of the third. Kennedy Hillis had a leadoff single and she stole second and took third on an error. Hills scored on Araceli Molina’s groundout.
Alamosa tied the score in the fourth. Makissa Quinlan led off with a triple and scored on a wild pitch.
The Mean Moose took the lead with a run in the fifth. Molina reached on an error and took second on the play. Another error put her on third and yet another error allowed Molina to score.
The Bulldogs regained the lead in the sixth. Karley Zamarripa hit a leadoff triple, and Remi Baca was hit by a pitch. Kayli Smiley doubled home both runners to give Pueblo Centennial a 4-3 lead.
Smiley added an insurance run as she came home on Lilliana Hanes’ single.
The Mean Moose put a runner on base in the bottom of the seventh, but she was left stranded as the game ended.
Olivia Castillo went the distance as Alamosa’s pitcher but was dealt the loss. She allowed five runs and 11 hits and she struck out one, walked none and hit one batter.
The Mean Moose had only three hits as Shaya Martin, Quinlan and Hillis all went 1-3.
Alamosa (4-2) will next travel to Montezuma-Cortez on Tuesday.
