ALAMOSA – The Alamosa and Del Norte high school girls basketball teams wrapped up the Erik Melgoza Shootout this past weekend with both schools facing Buena Vista at the AHS gym.
The Tigers barely lost to the Demons 37-32 on Friday, while the Mean Moose cruised to a 55-12 win on Saturday.
“We want to try to start fast and stay fast,” said Alamosa coach James Romero. “As a team a team, we’re trying to push the pace and play with up tempo. It’s good that the girls stuck with it and were successful today.”
Alamosa 55, Buena Vista 12
Arreli Felix and Leela Gutierrez both scored baskets to open the scoring for the Mean Moose. Adeline Smith scored Buena Vista’s first basket, then Alamosa went on a 15-0 run with Audrina Knorr, Alexia Montyoa and Aubrey Rothermich all scoring 3-point baskets and the Mean Moose led 19-4 at the end of the first quarter.
Macy Reavis scored the first points of the second quarter, bit Montoya made another three and Jaelin Garcia drove for a layup. Smith scored again for the Demons, but the Mean Moose scored the final nine points, with Garcia scoring six of them, to take a 33-8 advantage at halftime.
Felix, Knorr, Rothermich and Emmalie Quintana all scored in the third and Alamosa led 41-10 at the end of the period.
The Mean Moose scored 12 points in the fourth with Quintana making two threes, and Knorr and Montoya one each.
Rothermich and Montoya led the Mean Moose with 12 points apiece. Reavis led Buena Vista with four.

Brynley Brown gave the Tigers the early lead with a 3-point basket, but Reavis tied the score. Ady Ruybal also sank a three for Del Norte, but the Demons got four free throws to take a 7-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Julia Trujillo helped the Tigers regain the lead with two baskets early in the second. Emma Parra made two free throws, and Trujillo made a trey to help Del Norte to a 17-15 lead at halftime.
Daisy Lubbers gave the lead back to Buena Vista early in the third period. Adeline smith made a three, Liz Molitor scored four points, and Lubbers four more for a 31-19 Demons lead at the end of the third quarter.
Smith made the score 33-19 to open the fourth, but then the Tigers mounted a comeback effort. Parra made two free throws, Mackenzie Consaul made a layup, and Ruybal two threes to close the margin to 35-29. Macckenzie Consaul made a layup and a free throw to bring Del Norte within a three-point deficit, but that’s as close as it would get.
Ruybal was the Tigers’ top scorer with 11 points. Lubbers also scored 11 for the Demons.

What’s next
Alamosa (2-0) will travel to Greeley to compete in the University Invitational. Its first game will be Thursday against Elizabeth at 3:30 p.m. at Frontier Academy.
“There’s going to be a lot of great competition there, but we have a lot to work on,” Romero said. “We’re going to take these next few days and work on what we need to work on and prepare ourselves for the great competition up there.”
Del Norte (0-2) will play in the Las Junta Holiday Shootout this weekend. It will play Hoehne at 4 p.m. at Swink.
