ALAMOSA – The 11th-ranked Alamosa High School girls wrestling team had its only home match of the season on Thursday against Antonito at the AHS gym.

It was a tight match with the Lady Trojans prevailing 15-12.

“It was a good dual,” said Alamosa coach Rusty Johnson. “I’m glad they came down. They’re a new team and they wrestled hard. I thought our girls did well also.”

There were only five individual matches with the Lady Trojans winning three of them.

The 100-pound match pitted Alamosa’s Leah Pintor against Antonito’s Alyssa Abeyta. Abeyta had the first scoring – a takedown in the first period. The second period began with the wrestlers in the neutral position and Abeyta started with another takedown. Pintor then scored a reversal and a four-point near-fall to tie the score at 6-6. Abeyta got a reversal of her own for an 8-6 lead at the end of the period.

The third period saw both wrestlers record two reversals each and Abeyta scored a 12-10 win.

The rest of the matches were all won by fall. At 110 pounds, Antonito’s Eliana Garcia pinned Kennedy Hillis in 2:46. At 115, Alamosa’s Gizelle Meraz pinned Eliza Garcia in 1:11. Alamosa’s Samantha Maestas pinned Anaiya Romero in 3:30 at 120, and Antonito’s Taurea Gallegos pinned Shaya Martin in 5:39.

Both Alamosa and Antonito, along with Monte Vista are at the Tiara Challenge in Castle Rock this weekend.

“We had two girls win that tournament last year and we’ll see if we can repeat that,” Johnson said.
