Adams State men keep playoff hopes alive with win over UCCS

ALAMOSA – The Adams State University men’s basketball team maintained its hopes for qualifying for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference playoffs as it scored a 93-69 win over the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs Thursday at Plachy Hall Gym.

Cameron Kimble put ASU on the board first by making one of two from the free throw line. Then John Harge made a 3-point basket for a 4-0 lead.

William Becker put UCCS on the board with a dunk. But the Grizzlies scored the next nine points with Jude Tapia scoring five of them and Harge the remaining four points. Becker ended the run, but Jaylen Alexander went in for a dunk. Hannes Saar made a layup, but Harge scored in the paint.

Xavier Martinez made a pair from the line, but Luke Williams ,made a layup.

The Mountain Lions six straight points to close the margin to 19-14. Kimble made one of two from the line, but Gavin Carter made two free tosses. Harge also made two from the line and Alexander drove for a layup for a 24-16 lead.

Saar drained a three, but Harge made a layup and Williams a pair from the line. Carter scored five straight points before Alexander made a layup.

Carter scored again, but Williams, Wyatt Helming and Alexander all scored for a 36-26 advantage.

Martinez made a layup, but Tapia answered with a three. Carter closed out the first half scoring but ASU led 39-30 at halftime.

Carter also scored the first points of the second half, but the Grizzlies went on an 8-0 run. Alex Hurr, Alexander, Williams and Tapia each scored two points in the rally.

Saar ended the run with a layup, but Alexander and Williams both scored for a 54-36 lead.

Becker made a layup to end the Grizzlies’ run, but Kimble made a 3-pointer. Jayden Washington made a three for UCCS, but Harge scored in the paint.

Saar made two free throws, and Derik Pranger made a layup to cut the margin to 56-43. But Helming made a trey. Alexander and Williams both scored for a 63-44 advantage.

Martinez and Pranger both scored to ring the Mountain Lions within 63-48. After Alexander split at the line, Washington made a trey. Tapia also made a 3-pointer, but Martinez made a layup and a free throw to cut the deficit to 67-54.

Helming made two free throws and Hurr a layup. Martinez also made a layup, but Hurr made a trey for a 74-57 lead.

After Saar split at the line, the Grizzlies went on 19-7 run. Hurr scored nine points in the spurt, while Tapia and Williams scored four, and Kimble two.

Adams State had six players score in double figures. Tapia led the way with 18 points, followed by Williams with 15, Hurr with 14, and Alexander and Harge both with 13.

Harge and Williams both achieved double-doubles with 11 and 10 rebounds apiece.

UCCS was led by Carter with 15, followed by Martinez with 13, Becker with 12, Washington with 11, and Saar with 10.

Adams State (11-14, 6-11) will host CSU Pueblo on Saturday at 3 p.m.
