2025 Sports Year in Review

ALAMOSA – There were several highlights in sports across the San Luis Valley in the 2025 calendar year.

WRESTLING

Alamosa High School’s boys wrestling team finished second at the Class 3A State Tournament back in February at Ball Arena in Denver. They had one individual championship as Jeremiah DeLaCerda won at 106 pounds.

Three more Mean Moose were finalists in Anthony Meder (113), Uriah Martinez (126) and Dyson Woodward (150). They had one more placewinner in Jace Morgan, who was sixth at 165.

The Alamosa girls wrestling team finished in eighth place in the Class 4A State Tournament. The Mean Moose girls had two individual championships in Gizelle Meraz (115) and Samantha Maestas (120).

Centauri was fourth in the boys 3A tournament and it had an individual champion in Parker Buhr who won at 157 pounds. The Falcons had another state finalist in Matthew Salazar.

Centauri had two more placers in Spencer Smith who was fourth at 175, and Troy Munson who was fifth at 165.

In Class 2A, Center finished seventh in the state tournament and it had one champion in Aaron Valadez.

Four more Viking were place winners in Caden Ruggles who was third at 157, Michael Archuleta who was fourth at 113, Andree Meraz who was sixth at 144, and Martin Palma who was sixth at 195.

Monte Vista took ninth place and had five placers. Kevin Ciscneros was third at 150, Jacob Pacheco weas third at 165, Mathieu Dean was sixth at 106, Matthew Rodriguez was sixth at 113, and Jeremiah Baumgardner was sixth at 175.

In college men’s wrestling, Aaden Valdez took third place at 157 pounds at the NCAA Division II Tournament in March at Indianapolis for the Grizzlies’ only All-American.

The ASU women had two regional champions in Austria Holland at 110 poundsm and Corrie Williams at 138.

GIRLS SWIMMING

Sargent finished in 21st place at the Class 3A State Meet February in Thornton.

Emma Sewell placed in two individual events as she took seventh in the 200-yard individual medley and 11th in the 100 butterfly.

The Farmers were 15th in the 200 medley relay and 17th in the 200 freestyle relay. Swell, Kaylee Gonzales-Moore, Alycia Martinez-Chavez and Kyra Griffin were on the 200 medley relay team, and Sewell, Gonzales-Moore, Martinez-Chavez and Belle Anderson were on the 200 freestyle relay team.

BASKETBALL

Six high school basketball teams competed in their respective state tournaments in March.

The Alamosa girls team advanced to the Class 4A State Tournament at the Denver Coliseum. However, they were defeated in the first round.

Centauri qualified both of its teams to the Class 3A State Tournament which took place at the University of Denver’s Hamilton Gym. The Falcon boys finished in fourth place, while the girls lost in the first round.

Sanford also qualified both of its teams to the Class 2A State Tournament which was in Loveland. The Mustang girls finished in third place, while the boys won the consolation bracket.

Sargent’s girls also advanced to the 2A State Tournament. However, they did not place.

Ten more SLV teams competed in regional tournaments. The list included the Monte Vista boys and girls, the Center boys and girls, the Del Norte boys and girls, the Sierra Grande boys and girls, the Sangre de Cristo boys and the Creede girls.

The Adams State women’s basketball team had a final record of 19 wins and 12 losses and the Grizzlies were 14-6 in the RMAC. They advanced to an NCAA Regional Tournament but were defeated in the first round.

The ASU men went 12-16 overall and 7-13 in conference place in the 2024-25 season.

TRACK AND FIELD

Both of Adams State indoor track and field teams finished in fourth place at the NCAA Division II Meet in Indianapolis in March.

The Grizzlies had 19 first team All-Americans, three second team. It also had two individual national championships, both by Romain Legendre.

In the outdoor season, the ASU women finished second at the national meet, just one point out of first place. The Grizzly men finished in seventh place. Adams State had 11 All-Americans and one national champion by Tristan Spence in the 5,000-meter run.

In high school track and field, Alamosa finished eighth in the Class 3A boys state meet, while the girls tied for 13th place. The Mean Moose had two state champions as Elizabeth McQuitty won the girls 3,200-meter run, while Ethan Merrick won the boys 3,200.

Centauri was were 12th in Class 3A, and had one individual champion in Troy Sowards. Sowards won his second straight state championship in the high jump. The Falcon girls were 32nd.

In Class 2A, Center was 34th in the boys meet and 39th in the girls meet. Del Norte was 26th in the. boys competition, and Sanford was 31st in the girls meet.

In Class 1A, Creede was 36th in the boys meet and 30th in the girls. Sangre de Cristo was 23rd in the boys meet and 34th in the girls. Sierra Grande was 37th in the boys meet.

BASEBALL

The Monte Vista High School baseball team was the only local unit to advance to a state tournament as it competed in the Class 2A state tourney. The Pirates made it to the Final 4 but finished fourth in the tournament.

Alamosa’s baseball team also advanced to the postseason as it played in a regional tournament.

The Adams State baseball team qualified for the RMAC Tournament and advanced to the semifinals.

GIRLS GOLF

Three San Luis Valley girls golfers advanced to the Class 2A State Tournament in May. Alamosa had two qualifiers in Taybor Wiecdeman and Kiara Gallegos, and Monte Vista had one in Reagan Futrell.

GIRLS SOCCER

Alamosa High School’s girls soccer team won the Intermountain League championship for the second straight year and earned an automatic berth into the Class 3A State Tournament. However, the Mean Moose were defeated in the first round.

Alamosa finished the season with 10 wins, two losses and two draws.

FOOTBALL

Five high school football teams from the San Luis Valley advanced to the postseason in their respective classifications in the fall.

Two of them advanced to the semifinals as Centauri made it to the Class 1A semis, and Sanford to the eight-man semifinals. Both teams went 10-2 this year.

Two more teams made it to the quarterfinals in Monte Vista (Class 1A) and Sierra Grande (six-man). Sierra Grande had a 10-2 record and Monte Vista had a 6-4 record.

Alamosa also advanced to the playoffs and finished 6-4 on the season.

VOLLEYBALL

The highlight of the volleyball season was Alamosa advancing to the Class 3A state championship match. However, the Mean Moose were defeated by Eaton. Alamosa went 27-2.

Three more valley schools made it to the state tournament in their classifications. Centauri played in the Class 3A tournament, Sanford in Class 2A, and Sargent in Class 1A.

Three other local teams played in regional tournaments. The list includes Center, Del Norte and Monte Vista in Class 2A.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Alamosa High School boys cross country team took fourth place at the Class 3A State Meet. The highlight of the season was Ethan Merrick who finished in second place among individuals. One other Mean Moose finished in the Top 20 in Jeremiah DeLaCerda who placed 15th.

The Alamosa girls finished sixth in their state meet. Hannah DeLaCerda was the only Mean Moose in the Top 20 as she placed 16th.

Monte Vista’s Shae Romero had the highest finish among girl runners as she took third place in Class 2A. Del Norte’s Scarlett Maxwell was eighth in the 2A meet.

In the Class 2A boys race, Del Norte’s Mads Kreutzer finished in 18th place.

In college cross country, Adams State’s men’s team won the RMAC championship while the women were third. Both teams won at the NCAA South Central Regional with Tristan Spence winning the individual championship. Spence also won the national women’s individual championship, and Kidus Begashaw won the men’s individual national championship. ASU was the men’s national runners-up and the women placed fourth.

SOFTBALL

The Alamosa girls softball team had its highest placing in school history at the Class 3A State Tournament as the Mean Moose advanced to the quarterfinal round.

Alamosa finished then season with 16 wins and 11 losses.

BOYS GOLF

Alamosa qualified four golfers to the Class 3A State Tournament. Serjio Najera finished 21st, while Elliot MacKey, Clayton Treinen and Gibson Gillespie also competed.

The Mean Moose finished 13th in the team standings

Monte Vista qualified three to the Class 2A State Tournament. The Pirates were led by Connor Mellott who finished in fifth place overall. Also at the state tournament were Jakoby Ross and Aiden Ford.

Monte Vista finished in 11th place.

BOYS SOCCER

The Alamosa boys soccer team had a record of two wins, 12 losses and a draw, but it won two of its final three games.

GIRLS GYMNASTICS

Seven members of the Alamosa girls gymnastics team qualified for the Class 4A State meet.

Kenya Hostetter competed in all four events at state, while Braelyn Martinez, Leah Pintor and Chloe Kern competed in three events. Taylor Off and Nichole Goldsberry were in two events and Bella Hooker was in one.

SPIRIT

Alamosa took third place in Class 2A/3A co-ed cheer with 66.1 points. It finished behind state champion DSST: Cedar with 71.5 points, and runner-up Wiley with 68.2.
