Suspicious package closes county roads and bomb squad responded

RIO GRANDE COUNTY - The afternoon  of Tuesday, Oct. 6, all traffic was stopped due to a suspicious package on the side of the road in the area of County Road 7 North and County Road 5 West.


The Rio Grande sheriff’s office immediately dispatched a Deputy to check on the package. At this time the Sheriff shut down County Road 5 west, between CR6 North and CR7 North as a precaution. With assistance of an outside agency, the sheriff’s office made the decision to contact the Pueblo County SO Bomb Squad to assist in making sure that the suspicious package could not cause harm to anyone in the vicinity. The area that the package was located, was not affecting any residence in the area. Del Norte Fire and EMS were both put on standby for this incident as is protocol when dealing with an incident of this nature. At 7:34 p.m. the situation was deemed safe and all units cleared with no incident.
