Hikers discover human remains in western Saguache County

SAGUACHE COUNTY - According to a press release from Susan Medina with the Colorado Bureau of investigation (CBI), hikers in an area near an abandoned mine in a remote location in Saguache County discovered human remains Friday, Oct. 2.  The deceased is male and his family has been notified.  No additional information has been released at this time.

CBI agents from the Grand Junction regional office have been assigned to the case at the request of Saguache County Sheriff Dan Warwick. The agency will examine the remains to determine the identification of the person as well as the cause of death.

The remote location in the western part of Saguache County sits near the Hinsdale County line.
Based on the condition of the remains, it appears the body has been in the area for quite some time, Medina said. An autopsy is in progress with the Saguache County Coroner with a full autopsy expecting to take 4-6 weeks.

Sheriff Warwick commented Monday, Oct. 5, that the deceased is thought to be that of a homeless man who disappeared from Monte Vista earlier this year but this has not been confirmed.
